Siyu Ru is a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Social Work at Dalhousie University. She received her PhD in sociology from the University of Saskatchewan in 2023. Her doctoral dissertation focused on the experiences of people with physical disabilities in China and their experiences of living with companion animals. Her research interests include ableism and disability studies, One Health and the human-animal bond, substance use, immigration, disasters’ impacts on the well-being of human and non-human beings, and community resilience.

Szymon Parzniewski is a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Social Work at Dalhousie University. Most recently he worked as research associate for the ESRC-funded project ‘Recovery, Renewal, Resilience from COVID-19’, AMBS, University of Manchester, He received his PhD in International Studies from the University of Birmingham (UK) in 2021. His doctoral dissertation focused on the role of migration and diversity in building disaster resilience locally in the UK and Japan. His principal research interests lie in the field of interdisciplinary social sciences, specifically social geographies of mobility, diversity and agency in building resilience to crises and disasters.

Kyle Breen is a postdoctoral research associate appointed in the School of Social Work at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He received his Ph.D. in sociology from Louisiana State University in 2022. Breen’s research centers on the impacts of hazards, disasters, and environmental injustice on historically marginalized groups. Additionally, his research focuses on how environmental hazards affect educational processes and outcomes.

Jenna Hepburn is a current Master of Science student in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology at Dalhousie University and holds a Bachelor of Health Sciences from the University of Manitoba. Her master’s thesis is focused on the patterns of emergency department use for people experiencing homelessness in New Brunswick. Her research interests centre around social epidemiology, quantitative methods, homelessness, the effect of poverty on health, and the social determinants of health.

Julia Johnston

Julia Johnston is a graduate of Dalhousie University with a Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies. She also holds an HBA in Architectural Studies from the University of Toronto. With experience in both architecture and art direction, her research has focused on the role of design speculation and environmental imagination in architectural discourse. As an ongoing, interdisciplinary venture, she is interested in the capacity of the built world to make public the human impact within the current ecological crisis.

Chloe Briand

Chloe Briand is a bachelor of social work student in the faculty of health at Dalhousie University. She received her Bachelor of Science in psychology from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2020. She is passionate about advocacy for mental wellness and mental illness awareness. Her career goals include eventually completing and MSW and becoming a licensed clinical social worker who works with children and youth.

Philemon works as a research assistant at the School of Social Work and also serves as a teaching assistant at Dalhousie University’s IDS and Sustainability Departments. He has TAed for a variety of courses, including ‘Halifax and the World’, ‘Development Practices’, ‘Development and Activism: Methods of Organization, Manifestation and Dissent’, ‘Global Justice and Development’, and ‘Conflict Management and Negotiation.’ Philemon is currently pursuing a master’s degree in International Development Studies, hoping to complete it by May 2024, and is an Erasmus Mundus Scholar and an alumnus of Leipzig University in Germany. He has a Bachelor of Education in Social Studies from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, where he was exposed to basic and complex concepts and methods of instruction in Geography, Economics, History and Sociology. Philemon has also worked as a teacher, educating senior high students in geography, social studies, economics, and government. Before his current position, he worked as a Social Developer with the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, a specialized agency under the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection in Ghana. Philemon’s research interests are varied and include human rights, inclusion and diversity, evaluation of Gender-based violence policies and interventions, gender and development, mental health, leadership, teacher education and competencies, strategic management, disability studies, peace and security and conflict management. When he’s not busy with academics and work, Philemon enjoys travelling, exercising, counselling and community service.

Jonah Kurylowich is a Master of Architecture candidate at Dalhousie University. Jonah grew up on a cattle and cereal crop farm in Northern Alberta, and has a background in heavy oil operations, building systems design and firefighting. His research interests center around the built environment, climate change, crisis response and community resiliency.

For different coordinator and managerial positions in international non-profit organizations for the past eight years, Shahid Rahman has had multiple spectrums of experiences in academics, research, and implementation of community development projects based in rural segments of Bangladesh. He is seasoned in designing projects, leading the knowledge team, and preparing grant proposals. He served the largest refugee camp in the world by providing access to education and mental health support and designing outcome studies. He performed as an internationally validated core skills trainer in British Council for three years, providing training to around a thousand rural teachers. Currently MSW (candidate) at Dalhousie University, he is more into research on post-colonial social work practices, intersectionality, migration, and climate adaptation and disaster preparedness.

Emily Crosby is from Halifax, NS and received her Bachelor’s of Social Work at Dalhousie University in 2021. She is now completing her Master of Social Work at Dalhousie University. She has had a diverse range of work experiences including working with SchoolsPlus as a Community Outreach Worker. She started her research career with the Geriatric Medicine Research team with Nova Scotia Health in 2020 and has been involved in research on Covid-19 in the geriatric population. Nicolle Jaramillo is an accomplished researcher with a diverse background in logistics coordination, research analysis, and account management in the IT and entrepreneurship industries. Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Development Economics, her research interests focus on economic mobility, labor economics, gender economics, and AI. Her passion for economics, project management, and consulting services has been demonstrated through their involvement in various planning strategies and social media audience identification projects. Their extensive experience in leading research projects focused on more than ten countries has given them an in-depth understanding of global economic trends. Additionally, Nicolle has contributed significantly to a project training over 500 migrant entrepreneurs on business-related topics, providing one-to-one guidance and support to each entrepreneur.

Her experience in family law has informed her interest in restorative justice and serving marginalized communities through the analysis and reformation of current legal policy, with specific interest to how families are impacted. Dr. Mahed Choudhury

Dr. Choudhury currently is a post-doctoral fellow in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary. He was a post-doctoral researcher in the School of Social Work, Faculty of Health, Dalhousie University. He earned a PhD from the Natural Resources Institute (NRI), University of Manitoba, Canada. His past education also includes a Master in Natural Resources Management (MNRM) degree from the NRI and a master’s and a bachelor degree in Sociology from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Bangladesh. He is a recipient of several national and international scholarships including University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF). Prior to starting his PhD, he served as a faculty at the Department of Sociology, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Bangladesh.

His research centers around investigating the processes and the attributes of community resilience to climate-change-induced shocks (e.g., floods and cyclones) and stresses (e.g., drought and riverbank erosion) with a special focus on the social or human dimensions (e.g., power, knowledge, gender, and institution) of it. His PhD dissertation dealt with multi-level learning in reducing disaster-risk and building resilience to cyclones in coastal Bangladesh while wetland-community resilience to flash flood hazards in Bangladesh was the focus of his MNRM thesis. His research appears in Ecology & Society, Environmental Science and Policy, and Journal of Environmental Management journals.

Ravinder Bains is currently in the Government of British Columbia. Michael Fox

Michael Fox is a registered Social Worker in Barrie, ON, currently working in Children’s Mental Health as well as Intimate Partner Violence. Michael received his B.S.W. from Laurentian University in 2009 and is currently in his final year of his M.S.W. at Dalhousie University. Michael is a strong activist for anti-oppressive practices, community-based advocacy and the development of social policy that is rooted in the fair and equitable treatment of all people. Michael is passionate about the social construction of gender and sexuality, promoting community awareness about oppressive and marginalizing dominant social discourses, social justice within the Queer community as well as the integration of narrative-based practices for programs assisting men who have been charged with intimate partner violence. Michael brings a strong voice focusing on collaboration, active partnership within the community and advocacy centred on the values of social justice, critical reflection, integrity, innovation and accountability.
