Designs
Many opportunities to assist in the rebuilding of the area were realized in the reconstruction effort that took place after the Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan, China in 2008. Among those involved in the tremendous work were urban planners/designers, architects, landscape architects and other related professionals who made (and are still making) efforts to reconstruct the built environment, reexamine the dynamic human-place relationships, improve the quality of life of the survivors, and ultimately to promote sustainable development.
Based at two important national universities in Sichuan Province, Sichuan University and Sichuan Agricultural University, since 2009 (one year after the earthquake), I have been co-leading an education-based research-design team with Mr. Chaoping Hou (a nationally registered architect and an associate professor in the School of Architectural and Urban-Rural Planning at the Sichuan Agricultural University). We are working towards the completion of several post-disaster planning and design projects in Sichuan and neighboring provinces.
Within the design team are professionals of the built environment and related fields, such as architects, landscape architects, urban planners, urban designers, civil engineers, social workers, and undergraduate and postgraduate students, all aiming to apply interdisciplinary knowledge and methods into the design process by connecting university education with planning and design needs. Utilizing the participatory design approach, the design team amplifies the focus on the utilization of planning and design practices to advance the human-place connections in synchronicity with the local residents’ social, cultural and psychological needs. This multi-disciplinary work has been helping the residents to reestablish relationship with their surroundings. Displayed in this section are several completed projects in this field.
